Five percent of all breast cancers diagnosed in the U.S. each year occur in women under 40. Since breast cancer at this early age is rare, this makes a diagnosis especially shocking and challenging for young women. At a time in life when all of your friends are starting families and launching their careers, issues of treatment, recovery and survivorship suddenly take top priority in your world. Finding peers that you can relate to helps in the healing process.

“When I was diagnosed at 27, it was very difficult to find someone to talk to who was my age and had gone through the same thing,” shares WRFTC Co-President Jensen (Sussman) Arrowsmith. “Even though I had amazing support from my family and friends … I still felt alone. My friends were getting married and I was getting chemotherapy. For me, meeting other young women facing cancer made all the difference. I hope that this retreat brings the survivors the same feeling of peace, camaraderie and strength that it did for me.”

The Young Survivors Retreat will be held September 23-25, 2011, at the Deer Run Retreat Center located outside of Nashville, TN (3845 Perkins Road Thompson’s Station, TN 37179). The weekend-long retreat will give attendees the opportunity to connect with other young survivors, share their stories and discuss age-related challenges surrounded by Deer Run’s beautiful, serene setting. The weekend activities will include sessions on art, relaxation, nutrition, fertility, relationships, and beauty tips. Thanks to the success of the WRFTC fundraising events (Opry Goes Pink, Pink Trash Ball) and WRFTC supporters, the retreat is free for all attendees including any travel expenses to and from Nashville. Limited space is available and applications are being accepted now. To sign up for the retreat, please visit the Women Rock For The Cure website for an application – WomenRockForTheCure.org.

About Women Rock For The Cure

WRFTC was founded in 2007 by four friends with ties to the music industry: Jensen Sussman, Liz Lee Schullo, Rebekah Lee Beard and Tara Austin who all met through the Society of Leaders in Development (SOLID), an organization for young music business professionals. With the support of SOLID, the girls set out to organize an all-female, writer-in-the round benefit concert – later called Women Rock For The Cure – to help raise awareness and funds for SOLID’s Race For The Cure team. Since then, WRFTC has worked to support the Greater Nashville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, raising money and increasing breast cancer awareness locally. After two amazing years of packed-out concerts, the founders decided to make WRFTC a non-profit organization. With the group’s 501(c)(3) status, WRFTC is pinker than ever and always rockin’ to reach the organization’s vision; to fight breast cancer by utilizing the passion, creativity and strength of the entertainment industry to find inspiring ways to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Greater Nashville and other local breast cancer related organizations as well as increase awareness among young women and men in their 20s, 30s, 40s.
